# NYC energy law deadlines

> Most NYC buildings over 25,000 square feet must benchmark energy use (LL84) and file an emissions report (LL97) by May 1 each year, then post an energy grade label (LL33) within 30 days after October 1. Buildings over 50,000 square feet also file an energy audit (LL87) every ten years, in the year matching the last digit of the tax block.

## Local Law 84 benchmarking

Owners report the building's annual energy and water use through the EPA's benchmarking tool. Reports for calendar year 2025 were due May 1, 2026. DOB can extend a deadline by notice, as it did in 2025, so check the current year's notice.

## Local Law 97 emissions reports

Covered buildings file a report by May 1 of each year. For 2026, DOB's notice set the compliance report for May 1 and no later than June 30, and owners had until June 30 to apply for an extension to August 29.

## Local Law 33 energy grades

DOB issues the Building Energy Efficiency Rating label every October 1. Owners must post it in a conspicuous location near each public entrance within 30 days. For 2026, DOB stated the window as October 1 to October 31. A building that did not submit benchmarking information on time gets an F grade.

## Local Law 87 energy audits

Owners file an Energy Efficiency Report in the calendar year whose last digit matches the last digit of the building's tax block number, by December 31. A building on a block ending in 6 is due by December 31, 2026, and one ending in 7 by December 31, 2027.
