## Who needs the inspection

Gas piping systems in all buildings must be inspected, except one- and two-family homes and other buildings classified in Occupancy Group R-3. A Licensed Master Plumber, or a qualified individual working for one, performs the inspection.

Buildings with no gas piping system are exempt if the owner files a one-time certification from a utility company, a registered design professional or a licensed master plumber saying so.

## Filing steps and timing

| Step | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Inspector gives the owner the report and certification | 30 days after the inspection |
| Owner files the certification of inspection with DOB | 60 days after the inspection |
| Owner files that listed conditions were corrected | 120 days after the inspection |
| Owner files the final correction, if more time was noted | 180 days after the inspection |

A certification filed more than 60 days after the inspection does not count, and a new inspection is required.

Owners who cannot get an inspection by the due date may receive a 180-day extension by notifying DOB and paying the filing fee.

## Penalties

Failure to file carries a civil penalty of $1,500 for a 3-family building and $5,000 for all other buildings. To resolve the violation, the owner must pay the penalty and file the certification.
