Checked against city sources on

Short answer

NYC gas piping must be inspected at least once every four years, in a year set by the building's Community District. Districts 4, 6, 8, 9 and 16 are due by December 31, 2026, and districts 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17 by December 31, 2027. One- and two-family homes and other R-3 buildings are exempt.

LL152 schedule

Sub-cycle Community Districts Cycle 2 Cycle 3
A 1, 3, 10 January 1 to December 31, 2024 January 1 to December 31, 2028
B 2, 5, 7, 13, 18 January 1 to December 31, 2025 January 1 to December 31, 2029
C 4, 6, 8, 9, 16 January 1 to December 31, 2026 January 1 to December 31, 2030
D 11, 12, 14, 15, 17 January 1 to December 31, 2027 January 1 to December 31, 2031

The district numbers apply in every borough. For example, Community District 4 in Queens and Community District 4 in the Bronx are both in sub-cycle C.

Who needs the inspection

Gas piping systems in all buildings must be inspected, except one- and two-family homes and other buildings classified in Occupancy Group R-3. A Licensed Master Plumber, or a qualified individual working for one, performs the inspection.

Buildings with no gas piping system are exempt if the owner files a one-time certification from a utility company, a registered design professional or a licensed master plumber saying so.

Filing steps and timing

Step Deadline
Inspector gives the owner the report and certification 30 days after the inspection
Owner files the certification of inspection with DOB 60 days after the inspection
Owner files that listed conditions were corrected 120 days after the inspection
Owner files the final correction, if more time was noted 180 days after the inspection

A certification filed more than 60 days after the inspection does not count, and a new inspection is required.

Owners who cannot get an inspection by the due date may receive a 180-day extension by notifying DOB and paying the filing fee.

Penalties

Failure to file carries a civil penalty of $1,500 for a 3-family building and $5,000 for all other buildings. To resolve the violation, the owner must pay the penalty and file the certification.

Frequently asked questions

When is my gas piping inspection due?

It depends on your Community District. Districts 4, 6, 8, 9 and 16 are due in 2026, districts 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17 in 2027, districts 1, 3 and 10 in 2028, and districts 2, 5, 7, 13 and 18 in 2029.

Do one- and two-family homes need LL152 inspections?

No. One- and two-family homes and other buildings classified in Occupancy Group R-3 are exempt.

What if the inspection is done but I file late?

A certification filed more than 60 days after the inspection does not satisfy the requirement, and a new inspection is required.

How do I find my Community District?

DOB points owners to the NYC Department of City Planning website, where you can search your building's address.
